HP Smart Printer Setup

The HP Smart app is the primary software for your printer. Install it on the device you plan to print from, and use it to establish the printer connection. Installing the HP Smart app also automatically installs all the necessary drivers for printing and scanning.

1. Install the HP Smart app

Download the HP Smart app from your app store

2. Set up your printer using the HP Smart app

Use the guided printer setup within the HP Smart app to connect your printer via USB or to your internet network.

1. If you are setting up the printer on a Wi-Fi network, prepare the printer for setup.

  • Ensure that your computer or mobile device’s operating system is up to date.
  • Position the printer and the computer or mobile device close to the Wi-Fi router.
  • Activate Wi-Fi on your computer or mobile device and connect it to your network. If your computer is connected via an Ethernet cable, temporarily disconnect it and use Wi-Fi during the setup process.
  • Enable Bluetooth so the HP Smart app can detect the printer during setup.
  • For mobile devices, be sure to turn on the location service when prompted, and allow the app to use your location to detect the printer and provide setup solutions.

2. Open the HP Smart app.

3. If a Welcome to HP Smart screen displays, click Accept All.

4. Depending on what is shown in the HP Smart app window, click Set Up a New Printer

 or Add Printer

5. If you are adding a printer to your network, choose to set up a new printer or connect to a printer that is already on your network.

  • If your printer has never been set up before, select Get Started. If you’re asked to choose a connection type, select the appropriate type and then click Continue.
  • If your printer has already been set up and is connected to the network, click Add Printer or Complete Now.

6. Locate your printer in the list, click on the printer name or Set Up, and then follow the on-screen prompts to complete the setup. It may take a few minutes for the printer to appear.

7. If you’re using a Wi-Fi connection and your printer is not found, proceed to the next step.

8. Restore Wi-Fi setup mode.

  • For printers with a touchscreen control panel: On the control panel, open the Wireless  or Setup  menu, select Network Setup or Settings, and then choose Restore Network Settings.
  • For printers without a touchscreen control panel: Use the control panel buttons to Restore Wi-Fi Setup Mode on your HP printer.

9. Within 2 hours, close and reopen the HP Smart app, then set up the printer as a new device..

3. Enhance the security of your HP printer (wireless only)

Protect your printer to prevent unauthorized access.

  • Ensure that the network, printer, and device are connected through a secure connection. Avoid using open or public networks for your printer.
  • Use a strong password for your Wi-Fi network (router) and change it regularly.
  • Create a unique display name for your printer to easily identify it among multiple printers on the network.
  • Restrict access to printer features that allow remote printing, such as Print Anywhere or HP ePrint..

4. Use the HP Smart app to print, scan, copy, and fax.

Print, scan, copy, and fax directly from the HP Smart app’s home screen tiles. Additionally, you can check the printer status, troubleshoot issues, order supplies, and adjust printer preferences.

  • To print, choose a print job type from the home screen, select the item you wish to print, use the photo editing tools if needed, and adjust any print job settings.
  • To scan, select whether to scan from the printer’s scanner glass or document feeder, import a photo, or use your computer or mobile device camera to capture a photo or document.   • To copy (Android, iOS only), open the Copy tile, use the camera to capture a document or photo, select the size and number of copies, and then print the item in color or black and white.
  • To manage your printer, click the image of your printer on the home screen or Printer Settings (Windows only) to adjust preferences, check the printer status, and more.
  • To add or remove home screen tiles, choose Personalize Tiles at the bottom of the screen (Android, iOS, macOS) or in App Settings (Windows).
